According to the American Cancer Society there were and estimated 565,650
cancer deaths in the US in 2008.
As you read this it is likely that you had friends or family members that became part of this statistic.
We believe that someday a cure will be found but is most likely years down the road.
Even those that were fortunate enough to win their battle and extend their lives, were
in some cases forced to make extreme financial sacrafices during their treatment.
During the first year of Soccer For A Cure (2008) it was our good fortunate to have been invited to
a number of soccer events (tournaments, and games) and help raise awareness and donations
for families dealing with cancer in the states of of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee,
Maryland, and Alabama.
After meeting hundreds of soccer families at these events and
hearing many stories of a family member's struggle, it became apparent that the soccer nation is
acutely aware of the struggle families are having and want to reach out and help in some way.
Because of what we experienced in 2008, SFAC will launch the
Soccer Versus Cancer Initiative of 2009 - 2010
on September 1, 2009.
The Concept is Simple: - connect teams with cancer organizations
- invite cancer related not for profit organizations
that have the resources to identify families that need help with their day to day
living expenses
because of cancer to join this initiative,
- encourage soccer teams at every level (youth, adult, high school, college,
professional)
to participate by having at least one cancer fund
raising event sometime during their next season,
- encourage team to choose one or more of the
participating cancer related
organizations to be the receipent of
the donations from their event.
The Challenge is Huge - find volunteers from each state with
the passion and the time to reach out to families needing help.
The Rewards will be Great: - help families struggling financially because of cancer
