Mike Purcell

Mikel L. Purcell is a native Atlantan, whose family has deep roots in North Fulton County. He attended Oxford College and graduated from Emory University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. He received his Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree from Emory University Law School in 1971. Upon graduation from law school, Mike served with the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General’s staff, gaining extensive trial experience with the USAF Trial Judiciary. He has broad experience in business, wills and probate, trusts, real estate, and litigation matters, including representation in litigation matters relating to business, professional liability, construction, probate and estates. He has represented and advised churches and church governing organizations of several denominations as well as other non-profit organizations.

Mike is a member of the State Bar of Georgia (since 1974), The Florida Bar (since 1972), and several federal courts, including the Untied States Supreme Court. He is also a member of the Lawyers Club of Atlanta and the DeKalb Estate Planning Council. He is a partner in the Atlanta law firm of Smith, Bassett, Purcell & Koenig, founded in 1929.

Smith, Bassett, Purcell & Koenig practices general civil law and provides a wide spectrum of specialized legal services needed in today’s complex legal environment by individuals, families, businesses, non-profit entities, estates and trusts. These services include engineering and construction matters; wills, estate, and probate practice; real estate matters; corporate and business representation and advice; municipal, local government, and regional planning law; health care law; and construction, business, general, and probate litigation, with trial representation in state and federal courts in the metropolitan Atlanta area.

Mike’s mom and dad and many very close friends are cancer survivors. Soccer has been a good part of Mike’s leisure and sports interest. Mike’s son played select club and high school soccer with Charlie Corbitt’s son. This is how the Purcell family got to know the Corbitts. We spent numerous weekends at soccer matches all over the Atlanta area and traveled throughout the southeast together. Lem Purcell, Mike’s son, went on to play Division III collegiate soccer in the Old Dominion Conference at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. Lem was head men’s soccer coach at Amherst High School outside Lynchburg and was assistant women’s soccer coach at Sweetbriar College. Mike and his spouse traveled to Virginia very frequently to continue to enjoy the soccer experience. Mike’s 5-year-old granddaughter is showing great interest in playing soccer, so he is starting all over again. He has represented Charlie’s company, Soccer Information Systems, Inc., since its inception.
